Do You Know the Difference Between a Pressure Vessel and a Tank?

KNOW THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRESSURE VESSELS AND TANKS

PRESSURE VESSELS
o Purpose: Pressure vessels are designed to hold pressurized substances, such as gases or liquids. They serve various functions, including storing, processing, or transporting materials under pressure.
o Construction: Pressure vessels are typically robustly built and engineered to withstand high internal pressures. They adhere to specific design codes and standards (such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code).
o Shape: Pressure vessels can have various shapes, including cylindrical, spherical, or conical. They are often customized based on their intended use.
o Components: They may include features like nozzles, manholes, and safety relief valves.
o Examples: Steam boilers, air receivers, chemical reactors, and gas cylinders are common examples of pressure vessels.

TANKS
o Purpose: Tanks are primarily used for storage. They hold substances (liquids or gases) at atmospheric pressure or close to it.
o Construction: Tanks are simpler in design compared to pressure vessels. They don’t need to withstand high internal pressures.
o Shape: Tanks are often cylindrical or rectangular. Their shape is less critical than that of pressure vessels.
o Components: Tanks may have inlet/outlet connections, vents, and level indicators.
o Examples: Water storage tanks, fuel tanks, and chemical storage tanks are typical examples of tanks.

Pressure vessels handle pressurized substances and are specifically engineered for safety under high pressure. Tanks focus on storage without the functioning need for pressure containment. Both play essential roles in various industries.
